SHF - Deep Roots - Mission Trip 2026

 GOOD EVENING, Today was a very busy yet exciting day! We started our day with a wonderful continental breakfast, where we quickly got to work afterward. We worked and finished up on the garden, laying the rest of the bricks to beautify the sidewalk, the difference is crazy!! We had a very frightening encounter with a Brown Recluse spider while shoveling rocks out of the quad... Safe to say that we dodged a bullet. Some of us also worked on finishing painting the house or moving furniture into a U-Haul to be donated to veterans.    .     After all the work was close to being done we all took a break for a delicious lunch that was chicken tenders and egg noodles. Once everyone was done with their lunch we all went back to work on the garden and finished!! And because of all our hard work we got to go to the beach!  Good evening families and friends!! Today was our second to last day... isn't that crazy??  Like normal, our wake up time was 7:00 AM, although most of us didn't get up until around 7:40 AM for our 8:00 AM breakfast. Breakfast was, once again, continental, featuring foods such as bagels, waffles, and oranges (Anna loved the oranges)! After breakfast, we split up into two groups: painting and brick-laying. We were both part of the painting group, so we can explain our experience with that, and we asked Carter to help us with explaining their experience in the brick-laying group. The painting group consisted of eight people, including advisors; Greta, Ally, Emily, Jordyn, Erin, and Olivia were our fellow painters. We first started by painting the sides of the building with a light brown paint. Some of us used the rollers, while others cleaned up the edges around the trim with paintbrushes.  Good evening fellow people reading this. Today we went on an adventurous journey to DC. We started our morning bright and early at 6:30 and ate a continental breakfast with yummy pastries. We left Deep Roots at 8:15 (for once we were actually early) and had a 2 hour drive to DC. During the two hour drive we enjoyed listening to music some hip music like Bad Bunny. Once we arrived at the metro, we took a ride to lunch, at DC Central Kitchen where we talked to some of the employees about the work DC Central Kitchen does. They give culinary training to those who are struggling so they can find job. They also feed people, provide emergency housing, and long term housing. At DC central kitchen one of the workers shared his story about how DC central kitchen helped him find a family and job after being imprisoned for over 30 years.
